Wind Energy and Compressed Air Energy Storage

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzOyhqJA7AQ]Here’s a summary of a business plan in which an entrepreneur hopes to implement compressed air energy storage (CAES) in conjunction with a set of wind farms.  CAES shows some promise as an energy storage solution, though considerable work needs to go into finding the right caverns, to match the charge and discharge rate from the energy source.

I would like to know more about CAES and its application for energy storage of wind generation.

    Dilip Joshi,

Normally, compressing/expanding air is a lousy way to store/utilize energy, due to the inherent losses in the process. When applying the process to a wind turbine, like that proposed by General Compression, the greater system losses are still not offset by the benefits.

Underground storage of air compressed via wind turbine, with subsequent extraction of work from that compressed air via turbine and generator, will produce far less power than conventional wind turbines. While companies like General Compression claim their “isothermal compression process” is very efficient, they fail to acknowledge the piping flow losses from pumping the air back and forth. And not to mention the fact that the wind turbines must be located in close proximity to the existing underground storage. Unfortunately, the best wind locations are not located near the existing underground storage locations.
