New Approach To Ocean Wave Energy

New Approach To Ocean Wave EnergyIn the course of a given month, I’m sure I contradict myself at least once or twice regarding the hope that ocean wave energy can come to play a prominent role in the unfolding world of renewables.  Let’s put it this way: If this is going to happen at all, a number of criteria must be met.  The devices must:

• Be inexpensive to construct

• Be extremely heavy-duty, built for the horrendous conditions under which they will be operating

• Provide low operating expenses, which translates to easy maintenance and off-the-shelf components

• Offer a way to connect the power to its load in an inexpensive and straightforward manner

• Operate with a bare minimum of environmental impact

If there ever will be an approach to wave energy that meets these criteria, it’s the one provided by the Israeli start-up whose product is pictured here.  Note that 90% of the device is on-shore, and that not a single component requires custom manufacturing or exotic materials.  They estimate that a 1 MW machine (35 – 55 meters long) can be put in place for less than $1.5 million.  That’s impressive, to be sure.

Note also the company’s project pipeline.  They’re looking for installation partners around the world.  If anyone out there is interested, please let me know and I’ll make the connection.

  1. GMax Tidal Energy design standards are life safety, environment, output, maintenance, and transportation. We agree, wholeheartedly that working within the harmony of existing maritime based vendors is a crucial component to the long term success of any clean ocean energy project.

Inventing an industry to support a “new” industry is just not feasible (Yet). Case in point? Off shore wind tower installations are carried out by only a few companies with custom made ships, coupled with obscene pricing in the $40,000 + per day ranges! Then what about maintenance, or when a blade needs service 300 feet above the water, in the wind? I wonder what those workers comp rates are?

Using fair and sustainable practices with solid claims of output, vs TRUE cost per kw is left to us RE developers. Our goal is to be a gift that keeps on giving with all things considered.

As in any new industry, perspective customers must dream with their “Eyes Open”, to see further than a VC’s exit strategy, and to focus on long term carbon-free energy investment returns for many years to come.
