Here’s a letter, written by a member of the pro-nuke group of which I’m a part, published recently in Physics Today.

Though these folks seem to have an unnatural enmity towards renewable energy,  they make many excellent points about the future of fossil fuels, outlined very nicely here.

The link is to a very good article and I agree with them 99%.

It may be that battery storage will soon make renewables practical, but there is no guarantee. The risk of depending on something that may never exist or which may come into existence too late is unacceptable. Meanwhile, we know that nuclear power works.

While it would be easy to think the photo is some kind of exaggeration. It is not. The pollution can get so bad it is not possible to see across the street. You pray that no cars are coming as you cross and you couldn’t see them if they were.

It may be that in the 19th century the pollution in Pittsburgh was just as bad. It was said that clothes hung on the line to dry became dirty from the pollution before they dried. One can read something about that in the biography of Andrew Carnegie. People in polluted areas in China who can afford the equipment have air purifying devices in their homes.
