India: Taking Important Steps Towards Clean Energy

India: Taking Important Steps Towards Clean Energy Here’s some good news from my colleague Jon LeSage and his Green Auto Digest, albeit a bit tentative, regarding India and the challenges it faces to provide clean energy and transportation to its huge population–one which is expected to overtake China’s by 2030. Along with significant investments in renewable energy, India’s Prime Minister Modi has had meetings with Tesla’s Elon Musk (both pictured above), which will soon result in the establishment of a Gigafactory and a series of EV dealerships in this environmentally all-important region of the world.

There is no doubt that India is serious about slowing its import of oil for its skyrocketing number of cars and trucks, as well as its consumption of coal to power its burgeoning electricity grid. Of course, the only way any of this will happen at scale is the continued decrease in the cost of clean energy and batteries.

Fortunately, the trend in this direction is proceeding unabated, but will it happen in time to avert catastrophic, long-term, global environmental damage?  No one knows.
