Vehicle to Grid: The Time Is Coming

yo-auto-e-crossoverWe’re approaching the reality of vehicle to grid, aka “V2G,” the two-way flow of power between electric vehicles and the utilities. This means that EV drivers can be paid to allow the power companies to use the energy in their batteries to deal with urgent demands.  As discusses in this article, this will mean that EV owners can drive for free, i.e., receive free power, in exchange for  making this deal.

This sounds good until you consider the possibility, both real and imagined, that you’re going to come out to your car and find it incapable of taking you where you desperately need to go.  How happy will you be with that $500/year if occasionally you show up late to work, a meeting with a client or a doctor’s appointment?   Of course, you’ll be notified via cell phone if the utility is taking you up on the offer, but it still sound a bit horrifying.
