It’s a 3800 Km Cable, and That’s No Fable

Here’s news on an ambitious plan to transmit 10.5 gigawatts of electrical power 3800 kilometers undersea from a huge solar and wind farm in Morocco to the UK.   Even at the high voltages contemplated, the company building the link estimates line losses at somewhere between 10 and 12%, though they are justified given the ridiculously low LCOE (conservatively estimated at $0.013/kWh).

Next time someone tells you that renewable energy is expensive, you may want to mention this.

The generation cost is estimated at $0.013 however there will also be energy storage and several 3800 kilometer cables. The project is designed to be able to deliver several GW of baseload power 8 hours a day at a cost similar to current wholesale electricity prices – that’s all in the generation, energy storage and transmission.
