It strikes me that one of two things is likely in play here…
Either… Carson is sincere and irrational – honestly ascribing a personal reality to the literal interpretation of scripture, as well as being possessed of enough of a scientific mind to get through medical school (though his credentials and quality as a surgeon are under some suspicion, I understand).
Or… Carson is cynically manipulating the GOP base and electorate through parroting many of the most extreme and irrational positions.
I find there are generally three qualities present in a good public servant – integrity, intellect and information (of the accurate variety). Equally, I find bad public servants nearly always possess only two of these three. These latter are either ignorant, ignoble, or idiots – or some combination.

As seen on Facebook:
Like him or not Ben Carson has caused us to ask some tough questions like “Have we been overestimating the intelligence of Brain Surgeons?”.
