One day shortly before Christmas when my kids were little, we happened to be outside a department store, and I told them, “I want you to know that there is nothing in that store that I need, or even want. Not one thing. I would appreciate a Christmas present, but it would mean so much more to me if it’s something you created. Please write me a poem, paint me a picture, whatever you want.”
