In principle, you’re right.  In practice, we need to recall that, on the campaign trail, a smiling Mike Pence famously said, “I’m a Christian, an American, and a Republican — in that order.”

Now, what effects that actually caused to our country and the world is a matter of debate.  It was clearly a branding statement to Christian voters.
