Climate Change and the Snows in Armenia’s Mountains

Here’s an article on the snows in Armenia’s mountains (including Mount Ararat, the putative resting place of Noah’s Ark — pictured left) that are steadily melting due to climate change, and the country’s abortive attempts to do something about the unwelcome phenomenon.  The author suggests that the issue is a lack of international cooperation, as Armenia is land-locked and has no formal ties with any of its neighbors.  Of course, he’s correct, but I would say….

Armenia: Don’t feel bad.  While I commiserate with you, the level of international cooperation that would stem the rising concentration of greenhouse gases is an extremely distant and improbable notion at this point – even among nations that have no history of genocide and harbor no particular ill-will towards one another.  If you review the reports that come from the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) and read between the lines, you’ll realize that this planet is a very long way from any type of meaningful agreements on a global scale.  I think we all need to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
