Contrasting Ideas Re: The Fates of Fossil Fuels, Renewable Energy

A) Most people, even those who actually follow this subject, think that fossil fuels will gradually go away over the next 50 – 100 years, largely through the rise of environmentalism and the response of world governments that will bring pressure to bear on the oil companies and/or subsidize renewable energy for the sake of the environment.
B) This is completely incorrect. How can it be otherwise, when the oil companies essentially OWN the world governments? My position: the oil companies have already lost the battle. They are hoping that no one is noticing, and are busily misdirecting their audience, much as magicians do, but the world is busily replacing fossil fuels at a pace that’s far faster than anyone is realizing. Why? Pure market economics, which is ALREADY in the process of rendering fossil fuels obsolete. No one, certainly not incompetent/corrupt government, nor even the oil companies themselves have the power to turn this around. The situation is akin to selling buggies and stage coaches 100 years ago. Their time had passed, and there was no turning back the clock.
