Apparently, Al Gore lives large, and lugs with him a huge personal carbon footprint wherever he goes; we’ve been hearing about this more or less constantly since his 2006 documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” became a considerable box-office success. In fact, Gore’s lifestyle is a key point that many climate deniers use to support their claim that, if global warming exists at all, its mitigation only puts more money in Al Gore’s filthy hypocritical pockets. We’ve all had the experience of flipping through an in-flight magazine and finding ourselves utterly incapable of generating even the vaguest interest in any of the articles they contain. We can almost hear the editor ordering the staff journalists to write something completely noncontroversial, say, walruses are cute and quirky, daily exercise is not too burdensome once we commit ourselves to a goal, gambling is fun but potentially addictive, etc. What comes back for publication is banal but unobjectionable content that adequately fills the pages. To me, it’s an opportunity to express whatever I’m thinking, with whatever degree of circumspection and perfection I care to put into it. In speaking, I don’t have the luxury of entertaining my ideas from different perspectives that take time to emerge and digest, and then editing them until they’re exactly what I want to get across. We’re all aware of steady development of better and lower-cost batteries, which seems to be the putative victor here. Once affordable batteries provide a range of 350 miles, and we’re fairly close to that, the game will be over, and petroleum-powered cars and light trucks will be obsolete in very short order. In most of the households, cleaning products are put away in some cabinets and out of children’s reach. In the back of our minds, we all know that those products are highly dangerous, yet we use them daily and spread poisonous chemicals for the sake of having a clean home. (more…)
