Five Surprising Things that Can Be RecycledYou try hard but you may not be recycling everything that can be recycled. Have you looked into the options lately? From dental scrap to dirty diapers, enterprising recycling companies can handle more than you might have thought. While you might not quite be up to the idea of recycling the family pet into rendered glycerin for use in cosmetics, there’s plenty of other junk you could be recycling instead of throwing away. Outdoor Hobbies--Gettin' your Green OnIn today’s world, our daily habits are often those that lead to us losing touch with nature. Due to our many obligations, we neglect the call of the wild and stay confined to indoor-centric zones. It’s important however, to take some time to appreciate our environment, and not get caught up in the everyday rut of waking up, sitting at a computer all day, eating and going to bed. (more…)

Renewable Energy Getting Fabulously InexpensiveUp until yesterday, there has been some level of lingering doubt as to the cost-effectiveness of electricity from renewables in a direct comparison to coal and natural gas.  That debate is essentially gone at this point, given Solar Reserve’s bid to produce and sell electricity for $0.063/KWh in Chile, in a deal that will make use of the company’s breakthroughs in concentrated solar PV with thermal storage (which means that the power is “dispatchable,” available 24 hours/day).  (more…)

Republican "Traitors" Trying to Sabotage TrumpI had to laugh when a “friend” on Facebook shared: “Here Is The List of 20 Republican Senators Trying to Sabotage Trump,” calling upon me to expose these “traitors.”

In the first place, I’m rooting for these 20 people.  But more to the point, the dude really needs to look up the word “traitor.” Maybe in North Korea a traitor is someone who disagrees with a policy or a person–not in the U.S. That’s an extremely important part of what it means to be an American; it’s something a whole bunch of brave people have fought hard to preserve over the last 240 years.

Microgrids in BrooklynA colleague in Germany sent me this article in yesterday’s New York Times called, “Solar Experiment Lets Neighbors Trade Energy Among Themselves” and noted that she thought I’d find it interesting.

Yes, this is VERY interesting.  In particular, it’s a reminder of how the future will provide us with solutions to the problems of living in thousands of ways no one has yet ever dreamed of.  (more…)

Making the Case for Waste-to-EnergyHere’s a gruesome reminder of the need for waste-to-energy technology.  Sometimes the feasibility of plants that extract the chemical energy in municipal solid waste is hard to establish, in cases where the MSW itself isn’t causing problems associated with land use, odor, or human health and safety.  In the case of this terrible tragedy in Ethiopia, those factors were present in the extreme.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their families.

How to Achieve the Look of Sustainable DesignWith all the new trends in interior design, one often wonders what is that lasting quality that categorizes a look as “in” or “our” at any given moment. And not everyone’s wallet is meant for annual décor changes, simply because trends often bring costly new ideas, which will then fade as different decorating fads take their place.   (more…)
