Does Science Have an Endpoint?Put differently, can human consciousness ever understand the universe in its entirety?

The incredibly quotable Albert Einstein once said, “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.”  He died in 1955 (the year I was born), and that’s quite a while ago; I wonder if he would say that today, as more questions seem to have emerged than answers. (more…)

Shell Oil and Climate ChangeHere’s a video made 26 years ago by Shell Oil, showing that, at some time before that point, they had become completely aware of the relationship between fossil fuel consumption and rising temperatures of the Earth’s atmosphere.  What have they done in the interim? U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Peril (Understatement)If you’re trying to determine the legitimacy of Scott Pruitt (pictured) as the new Administrator of the EPA, this video is for you.

Warning: this footage is beyond disturbing; it’s disgusting.  The appointment of a lawyer who receives huge sums of money from the very companies he’s ostensibly tasked to regulate is arguably the single most corrupt event in the history of the U.S.  (more…)

Nuclear Weapons: Back in the Headlines

Of all the reasons to be horrified by the developments in U.S. politics, a critically important one is summed up in the petition put forth below.  This was an issue in the election campaign, but unfortunately, it didn’t win the day; 61 million people didn’t have a problem with the idea of a sociopath having the sole power to destroy our civilization. What's Not Rotten in Denmark: On This Day, Every Kilowatt-Hour of Their Electricity Was Generated By WindYes, Denmark used not a single gram of fossil fuel (or anything else besides wind) to generate its electricity today.

Naysayers will point out that Denmark is atypical in its vast wind resources, its small population,  and its proximity to a neighboring country that can purchase the power it generates in excess of its internal demand.  (Guess what: I’m aware of this. )

The point remains that we’re surrounded by examples of the fact “renewable really is doable.”

Green MakeoverA break area complete with ping pong tables and cosy beanbag chairs made for cheeky afternoon naps, outside courtyards and an airy, open plan central atrium filled with ergonomically designed workstations…oh, the fun you could have with your office if you only had the room.

A Google-esque workplace may be a dream of yours, but in a property market where space comes at a premium, you’d also need the budget of a super successful multinational to create one. (more…)

Climate Change Comes BushfiresFire season is a serious time – especially for those living in Australia. The 2015-2016 bushfire season was one of the most destructive Aussies have experienced; and without adequate planning and attention to detail, it’s all too easy to become a victim of the heat. 2017 has already shaped up to be a tough year for firefighters and the hot dry days are far from being over. And with fire seasons only getting longer thanks to the drastic climate change, we need to do everything we can to prepare our homes, families and loved ones. (more…)

"Climate Hawks" Outraged at Trump's Plan to Eradicate the Environmental Protection AgencyHere’s something I got from the people at Climate Hawks, a group that, as its name suggests, adamantly supports climate change mitigation.  The only thing one can say about the appointment of Scott Pruitt as administrator of the EPA is that it’s totally consistent with Trump’s strategy to destroy most departments of the federal government by tapping avowed enemies of each of these organizations to run them.  For anyone wondering how we’re going to keep the air clean, the water safe, ensure our entire environment from becoming a cesspool, I wish I had a good answer for you, but I don’t.   (more…)

Environmental and Health-Related Reasons to Switch to Organic Bed SheetsYou will spend around a third of your life in bed. For most of us, that time is well spent; there is nothing like lying in bed. However, some people will wake early in the morning and find that their skin allergies are causing them trouble. If this is a problem for you then your sheets may be causing it. If you are sleeping in cotton sheets then they could be causing your allergies to flare up. To get an allergy-free sleep you need to make the switch, not to polyester sheets, no one likes them, but to organic cotton. (more…)

Are We Making Progress as a Civilization?A friend wrote to me last night: I will tell you, Craig, I was so utterly horrified by the dolphin video (that she had shared on Facebook, re: Japan’s considering dolphins pests and slaughtering them wholesale) I doubt I will ever sleep well again. (more…)
