Re: the meme here, a reader notes:

Trump inherited the family’s money and lavishly spent it on himself. As he got older he realized people mimic the rich and famous. He exploited that weakness in others which made him richer. Now surrounded by yes men and lawyers he feels untouchable. But let’s prove him wrong and punish him for his treason to the fullest extent of the law! Suddenly now the day seems a more friendly place to be alive.

Yes.  It does feel more friendly, I have to admit.  This really is the beginning of the end for this ass****.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect had a huge impact here.  Tens of millions of people who know next to nothing about science,  international relations, economics, or constitutional law suddenly considered themselves experts, and accepted the bull**** that the then-president was feeding them.

Regarding the meme here, a reader notes:
Yeah, Liz Cheney is a political opportunist, coached by her sociopathic father.  She did what she did as a calculated play to position herself for higher office, and she’s gonna be rewarded for it.
What you’re saying may be correct. Personally, I don’t think it’s fair to impute an ill-motive, but that’s just me. She’s certainly on the right side of this issue, regardless of what’s driving her.

This is true of the present day, but it can’t last.

Even my mother, a life-long Republican and Fox News acolyte, says it’s just a matter of time before Trump is indicted.

The most likely charges are seditious conspiracy and stealing classified documents, and his most probable landing spot is federal prison (or Saudi Arabia).

What are his prospects of commanding the GOP from either locale?

Unfortunately, that means he has avoided implicating Trump.

Taking the former president down will require pursuing one of the (numerous) other legal avenues.

One of Trump’s lawyers predicts “mayhem” if Trump is indicted.

I see nothing wrong with that.  Anyone who expects every single one of the tens of millions of heavily armed Trump supporters to stand around peacefully while Trump is hauled away in handcuffs is an idiot. (more…)

Those interested in seeing justice done in response to the numerous crimes of former president Donald Trump will be heartened to hear the words of one of Harvard Law School’s professors of Constitutional Law, Laurence Tribe.

At the very center of present-day Republican politics lies dishonesty.  It’s called “The Big Lie” for a reason, but whether we’re talking about attempting to overthrow the entire government, or just committing smaller crimes, like stealing classified documents, there is really very little integrity left in the party at present.

Information on the story in the meme is here.

My suggestion for these people is to confess to exactly how bad all this is, and make a statement “re-establishing” their party, just like Wells Fargo did after it was revealed to the world that they were essentially a criminal organization.  Their rebranding tag line: “Wells Fargo–established 1852.  Re-established 2018.”

Of course, the GOP will take their lumps in the next election or two, but I suggest  that’s better than being recognized, for an indefinite period of time, as career liars and criminals with no hope for redemption.

I once heard an anthropologist say that of the hundreds of cultures he had studied, from present-day to ancient times, there are exactly zero that tolerated dishonesty.  The demand for personal integrity is a universal characteristic of humankind.

This is something that the RNC might do well to consider.

As an action item, simply publish a list of every Republican at the federal and state level who threw his weight behind Trump after the 2020 election, and say, “We’re sincerely sorry.  Please vote to remove every single one of these despicable human beings.  We will never let anything like this ever happen again.”

We all respect Liz Cheney for her fierce integrity and true patriotism, but, as mentioned earlier, we would be very foolish to think that just because she upholds rule of law that she’s somehow turned into a steward of the environment.

There are identically zero flavors of modern-day Republicans that aren’t lethally toxic to the notion of environmental responsibility.

This guy has a point.  We already know Trump sent an armed mob on federal property (the Capitol), and that he stole classified documents.  Why not just arrest him and deal with the fallout, while you’re building a case around more serious crimes?

Sure, there is going to be some violence, but think about the mindset of these 2022-model insurrectionists, having watched almost 900 of their 2021 compatriots charged, tried, and punished for a far more excusable crime, i.e., rioting because the then-President of the United States ordered you to.

It’s hard to imagine what’s to be gained by waiting.

From Bertrand Russell:
“The first thing to realize…is that most people go through life with a whole world of beliefs that have no sort of rational justification, and that one man’s world of beliefs is apt to be incompatible with another man’s, so that they cannot both be right. People’s opinions are mainly designed to make them feel comfortable; truth, for most people is a secondary consideration.”
This quote is probably 80 years old, and, while has applied all through human history, it’s especially relevant today.
Russell’s era, the early-mid-2oth Century, coincided with the early days of television.  Suppose you had gone to the president of one of the budding networks with a pitch for a show that went like this:
“It’s a show called “The News,” but it’s really not news at all.  It’s a collection of incendiary lies directed at uneducated white people, inciting their anger at colored people and immigrants like Italians.  If there is a Democrat in the White House, it makes him look like a crooked, senile fool.  If it’s a Republican, it ignores any and all facts, and makes him look like a courageous superhero, a champion of the people.  It’s bound to be a hit, because everyone wants to hear what he already believes, and no one really places any value on truth.”
Your sorry ass would be out on the street as fast as security could escort you out of the building.
Just a few decades later, that concept, in the form of Fox News, rakes in $12.9 billion annually.
