Voting in 2022

There’s so much at stake, and practically everyone understands that.

There’s so much at stake, and practically everyone understands that.

This is the first one of my own.

Of course, 50 years ago that meant William F. Buckley and Richard Nixon, not Donald Trump and QAnon.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said that campaigning in 2024 would be “a waste of time, quite frankly, because I have already won that election.”
Asked how he could have won an election that is not scheduled to occur for another three years, he said, “People are saying that it already did happen. A lot of very smart people are calling me and saying that.”
As we all know, humor needs to be rooted in truth. And, when we think about it, Trump has already shown that the actual vote count is immaterial to how he sees the election outcome.
He was in Iowa the other day with the same old lies, rattling on and on. Video of some of his fans indicate that they’re tiring of all this, and would like to hear something new.

There are a few things I would add.
Police who use excessive force, especially when a suspect’s death comes as a result, should be held accountable.
War should be used as a last resort, and America’s defense budget should be reduced. We should lead the world in the direction of the abolition of nuclear weapons, and we should not sell weapons to butchers, nor cozy up to the world’s dictators.
Wealthy people should not use their riches and power to escape justice.
The United States should lead the world in environmental stewardship.

That said, I can’t imagine how unsatisfying it would be to know that I could have ended world hunger or mitigate climate change, but decided to participate in a space race against my fellow billionaires. Conversely, Dolly Parton should feel very good about her ongoing quest to assuage suffering all around the world.

My response: Parents who believe they, rather than doctors, are the authority on medical matters should not have had kids in the first place, and run the risk of criminal prosecution if that authority causes their children harm.

The United States may actually rank at the very bottom of the list. We do a very poor job at pulling people out of the river, and we couldn’t care less about what got them wet in the first place.
