Through the centuries, science and religion have had a tumultuous relationship.

There have been numerous attempts to unite the two, e.g., Thomas Aquinas’s 13th Century attempt to prove the existence of God with unaided reason, Descartes’s 17th Century five different proofs of God’s existence using Aristotelian logic, and our current Pope, who’s doing everything in his power to ensure that science is employed in the way we all live our lives. The rest of the first world has free healthcare, education, and a variety of social programs that their citizens highly value.  But the progressives’ platform in the U.S. is called the “far-left” by Trump supporters, most of whom have no idea how people in other developed countries live, nor do they have any interest in the subject.

We often hear discussion on normality.  When will we have it?  Will things ever be the same?  If not, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Cynics see what’s happening in the U.S. vis-à-vis the loud minority of anti-vaxxers and infer that this itself is the new normal.  They warn us to get used to living among hoards of ignorant and selfish people whose actions in this case may extend the pandemic for many years.

Optimists correctly observe that the majority of people have the intelligence and compassion required to do the right thing.

In any case, my hat’s off to the wizard who created the meme here.  The only thing of note that will happen in August is that the month will pass without the reinstatement of a former president.

From a reader:
Ever heard, “You can’t fix stupid”? Well, I think there’s definitely a level of stupidity that is incurable and that is to such an extent that it is endangering Humankind. It really is and that’s a gigantic problem for the good people of this planet who want to live in a sane world.
When your level of stupidity has reach the point where you truly believe in your core that your vaccine will not work unless others got it as well, I think it’s time for you to exit this world to let others a chance to make a better one.

You’re confusing stupidity with manslaughter.  He didn’t mean we’d have fewer cases per se, but fewer known cases.

He wanted to improve his image by sending hundreds of thousands of Americans to agonizing deaths.

Ranks in the top ten worst crimes in human history.

From this:

Last month in Norway, new passenger plug-in electric cars were 84.7% of the total car market. Other types of vehicles fraught for the remaining 15% (8.4% ICEs, 6.9% HEVs) before they will entirely fade in the coming years.

In the United States, it’s almost impossible to imagine anything like that here.  Norway is under zero pressure from Big Oil, and simply does what’s right for its people and for the world at large.  If you want to explain that to an American, be prepared to be received with the cry, “OMG, it’s socialism!”

As suggested in the “welcome” mat here, these aren’t particularly amiable time in the U.S.

The right-wing’s position on things like COVID-19, climate change, the insurrection, and the legitimacy of Trump has us progressives in a snit.

Here’s a summary of the election “audit” from the chairman of the county in which the Nevada recount is taking place.

Love the blend of passion and humor.

Meme at left from a reader.

My response: There are a couple of things I find interesting here:

A) How the 1.01 million U.S. doctors and 2.98 million nurses all conspired, maintaining absolute secrecy, with the U.S. federal, state, and local governments, to take control of the U.S. population, and

B) How the other 200+ sovereign nations on Earth and all their journalists are apparently in cahoots with the U.S.-based media.

It’s really quite a belief system you have.

Some people say that nonstop growth in consumption lies at the root of a healthy civilization.

If this were a planet of infinite size with resources that could never be depleted, there might be some merit to this claim.  As it is, however, humankind must find a way to keep society afloat without the mindless drumbeat of extraction, transportation, processing, manufacturing, distribution, sales, consumption, and waste disposal.

The so-called “Library of Things” is a fabulous idea in this regard.  The average cordless drill is used nine minutes from the time it leaves the shelf at the hardware store until it finds its way to the landfill. It doesn’t have to be that way.
