It’s the 92nd birthday of the eminent biologist, naturalist, and author E.O. Wilson, who said, “[Destroying rainforests for economic gain] is like burning a Renaissance painting to cook a meal.”

It’s sad that our culture is driven so little by science and so forcefully by economics, and that this effect has become so greatly amplified over just the past few years, by what could be called the “Trump phenomenon.” Our society now ridicules intelligence and academic achievement, is indifferent to truth, and celebrates anti-intellectualism and wealth at any cost.

The paucity of posts here recently is due to the fact that my wife and I are en route from Santa Barbara, CA to North Dakota, driving our daughter’s car up to her, and making stops along the way to visit a few national parks like Bryce Canyon; it’s spectacular (see below).

When we arrive at our destination, we plan to take a few day trips, perhaps including Mount Rushmore, which was in the news not too long ago when President Donald Trump spoke with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem about the possibility of adding his face to the icon.  And yes, that actually happened.

Here’s one from the vaults of “just when you thought you’d seen it all.”

I suppose what we can infer from this is that the Mr. Pillow guy actually pays his bills, unlike Giuliani’s former employer.

Seriously, how large is the audience of people who think Rudy is a credible human being?  Who believes he was smart in choosing to go from one of the most respected people in the country to a lying, criminal Trump lackey?

One word stands in mind: Slippers!

Normally, we hear about stupidity that comes from some corner of the world we’ve never visited, and perhaps never knew existed.  But here’s one from the small town in rural Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez, in which 2GreenEnergy makes its home:
(On the local Facebook page)  The vaccine clinic for Saturday in the old gym (at Santa Ynez High School) has been canceled!!

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland orders new environmental review of the leasing program, saying the Trump administration did an ‘insufficient analysis’ of drilling’s impact.

The Biden administration on Tuesday suspended oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, targeting one of President Donald Trump’s most significant environmental acts during his last days in office.

Well, a lot has changed. Now he was a family man, and he had no jail experience.  Also, I’m sure he had a job.  Perhaps he was well respected in his community.

Make no doubt, this is a tragedy, one that is unprecedented in U.S. history.  Never did we elect a clever conman to presidential office, one who cared about nothing and no one but himself, one who would sacrifice the lives, without limit, of rubes who trusted him, in order to ensure a continuation and expansion of his power.

When these poor fools’ trials come around, we can expect to hear a lot of, “I just wasn’t thinking straight. It’s as if I had been abducted by a cult. I was simply doing what I was ordered to do by our leader.”  News flash: That doesn’t work as a criminal defense.  Human beings are expected to use reason as a guide to their behavior, and obey the law, regardless of what their hero instructs them to do.

Re: the meme here, as reader notes: Please explain the cultural differences between the U.S. and Japan. Or perhaps run the numbers per capita for the other countries? While this lovely poster is powerful it’s comparing apples to oranges to pineapples!

It’s true that this would be more meaningful if the killings were presented on a per capita basis, but what’s happening in America is still disgusting.  The U.S. population is about 2.5 times that of Japan, not 4000. Btw, the poster is wrong: these figures include weapons of war as well as handguns.  You can’t wipe out an entire movie theater with a handgun.  (more…)

Regarding the red MAGA hat, I beg to disagree.  Both the swastika and the Confederate flags are signs of evil, of genocide and slavery, respectively.  The red hat incorporates those as well, but it adds in an important ingredient missing in both: stupidity.

We don’t associate stupidity with the slave-owners or the Nazis, but it’s impossible to see pictures of people in red hats and not think: How effing dumb can these people be? (more…)

The subject of gun rights for convicted felons is a little more complicated that this, but it’s true in the main.

How ironic.

Whether you remember Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins, his sit-com of the 60s, or any of the other hundreds of things he’s done in his long, eclectic, multi-award-winning career, it’s clear that, at age 95, he’s still totally lucid.

“It bothers me that people can’t read him (Trump).”

Me too, good sir.
