The popular Christian/humanist pastor John Pavlovitz writes:
It’s simply demoralizing sharing a country with people who think Donald Trump is someone worth emulating: to be surrounded by that kind of moral inversion every single day, to be continually encountering such cruelty.  It’s a source of profound and sustained grieving to believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and afforded opportunity—and to know how many simply do not share that belief.

From Bloomberg:
Greenland has decided to drop all future exploration for oil as the government responds to environmental concerns, according to Danish media.

Naalakkersuisut, as the island’s government is called, “has decided that the environmental consequences of oil exploration and production are too great.”

Here’s a piece from Reuters that suggests that U.S. banks may be required to undergo climate-related “stress tests,” to ensure that they have sufficient resilence in the case of disasters caused by climate change: floods, droughts, wildfires, etc.   Fed Chair Jerome Powell (pictured) says he’s “open to the idea.”

Such practices are universal among European banks.

Here’s another good illustration of an important fact.  Your Uncle Bob may be a climate denier.  That’s his right.  Recognize, however, that in the circle of people who are responsible for managing trillions of dollars, there is no such thing as climate denial.  These people didn’t get where they are by imbibing right-wing political crap from Fox News and the like.

As one could expect, the people spreading malicious lies on Facebook are having a hell of a time with the fact that FB will not host their BS.
Someone wrote: FB has just censored 3 of my posts before the ink was even dry; this is how communists operate………………..
You may be aware that Trump is suing FB, Twitter, and Google on the basis that they are violating his First Amendment right to free speech.  The reason that this case will be immediately dismissed is that these are private entities with terms of use that enable them to remove content that contains misinformation/disinformation.  They’re perfectly within their rights to do so.

As we look down the barrel of the first, and almost definitely not the last, of the variants of COVID-19, we are dealing with the very significant percentage of the U.S. population that refuses to get vaccinated, a phenomenon that could make dealing with the pandemic impossible.

This comes at a time when the rejection of science and the absorption of misinformation/disinformation is at an all-time high.  The cartoon at left represents what underlies a great deal of this: the notion that the average Joe can use the Internet to become an expert on this or any other subject.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

For the first time in Chicago, some 911 calls for mental health emergencies won’t be answered by police officers but by mental health professionals paired with paramedics.

In one pilot program starting this fall, a paramedic will be dispatched with a mental health clinician for “behavioral health calls.” In another, a paramedic will work with a “recovery specialist” on calls involving substance abuse.

“America First” and “Make America Great Again” are the two most prominent slogans of Trump and his supporters.

Once could argue that they’re not too much worse than “God Bless America,” because it too suggests that there is something exceptional, something singularly wonderful about the United States.  Some folks think that God should choose to bless America, rather than France or Japan, or one of the other 200+ sovereign nations on the planet because of what fine people we are and the fabulous values we hold.

In any case,  Trump’s slogans are indeed chosen well, as they appeal to people with these beliefs.

We can only hope that this era gives way to one of greater enlightenment and compassion for our fellow human beings.

In Malibu Starbucks just now and ran into Caitlyn Jenner, one of the dopes vying to take Gov. Newsom’s job. I engaged her, asking what she drives and what her position was on energy. She drives an Escalade!!! And worse, her understanding of energy is Trumpian in its ignorance.
