Apparently, some people are suggesting that those with extreme right-wing views need to be “deprogrammed,” that controversial idea normally associated with wresting a loved one from the jaws of some sort of cult.  A few thoughts:

• There is a difference between “right-wing” and QAnon; subscribers to the latter have intractable beliefs that pose real danger to those around them.  Flag-waving, gun possession, segregationism, war-mongering, etc., are one thing; they should not be conflated with armed insurrection and murder.  (more…)

“It not a question of if; it’s a question of when,” remarks an astrophysicist on the prospect of our finding extraterrestrial life.

Here’s a wonderful article on a recent discovery, marking just one more data point in humankind’s quest to find life outside the confines of our home planet.  This one is an object, detected by the telescope atop Mount Haleakala in Maui, built specifically for this purpose.

Almost everything it observes are asteroids, zipping through our solar system at a cool 40,000 MPH.  This one however, has characteristics that defy every known scientific theory–except one: it’s the handiwork of an alien civilization.

In response to this article on Biden’s attempt to reunify the country, someone noted: Soaring pleas for unity won’t work, but maybe concrete achievement will.

First, there is a problem with “concrete achievements,” i.e., that both sides take credit for them.

More to the point, though concrete achievements are always welcome, a simple cessation of meanspirited language will go a long way.  Biden will usher in a period in American life during which we don’t go out of our ways to be ass***s to one another just for sport.  If there is anything we know about him, especially at this stage in his life, it’s that he doesn’t stir up partisan rancor for its own sake.

This could be fabulously effective.

Based on the events of the last few days, it’s possible that the next four years could be as good as the previous four were bad.

Great to see criminal morons going away for long periods (video below); our nation can use this time of tranquility to recover some of its sanity.

Most of these people live paycheck-to-paycheck, and millions make starvation wages.  Now a couple of hundred are getting carted off to prison.  This hasn’t really been a bonanza, has it?

Maybe we need to rethink our position here.

It is time for the country to reunify, but around what central premise?  Let’s show some real courage and wisdom here.

Iconic journalist Bill Moyers begins a recent essay:

I’ve been forced to write about Donald Trump an awful lot during the past five years and the problem I always face when writing in a limited space, like this one, is which of his countless horrific qualities to focus on. The same thing happens when I need to address the consequences of the policies of his administration. There are so many terrible ones, so many victims and so many enablers. I always found myself asking, “Who deserves a thousand words today?” (more…)

No one knows who wrote the words at the left, but it’s most certainly a sincere statement, one that is echoed by America’s allies around the globe.

Did we go through a dark period, one characterized by dishonesty, corruption, and hate?  Yes.

Did we purge that malignancy via rule of law?  Indeed we did. (more…)

From Desmog, an organization whose mission is: “Clearing the PR Pollution that Clouds Climate Science.”

Finally, as President Joe Biden entered the White House he signed a slew of executive orders on January 20, including rejoining the Paris climate agreement and rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline. The move blocks construction of the 1,200-mile pipeline, and puts an end to a saga that has persisted for more than a decade. In a statement, Madonna Thunder Hawk of the Lakota People’s Law Project said: “We only achieve huge wins like this by speaking out together.”  (more…)

Here’s an article presenting some of the drawbacks of electric vehicles.

This doesn’t explain too well why Tesla’s market cap is $806 billion.

Seriously, some of these were true 10 years ago.
