As suggested here, great numbers of Republicans are jumping ship in their voting this year.  They’ve seen enough.

There is no shame in making an observation and then changing your mind based on what you just saw.  (more…)

Foolishly, I got involved with a whole bunch of people who believe passionately that the economy should be reopened immediately, and consider the restrictions to be some mixture of slavery, false imprisonment, and violations of their constitutional rights to assemble.  They come from all walks of life: musicians, salespeople, etc.  Several of them say that the death rate from the virus is a small fraction of 1%, the same as the annual flu. Especially given the daily vagaries of this administration, we often wonder how world history is going to regard these times.  With respect to the COVID-19 virus, I get that the author of the meme here has nailed it.

Governments should focus on climate protection when considering fiscal stimulus packages to support an economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday. Her comments are the clearest sign yet that Merkel wants to combine the task of helping companies recover from the pandemic with the challenge of setting more incentives for reducing carbon emissions. Imagine living in a country whose law-making process isn’t completely controlled by moneyed interests.  What would it be like if our legislative bodies here in the United States functioned so as to protect our people’s health and safety, educate our children, safeguard our environment, and stay out of useless wars?

All I can add is that I don’t know where PR’s Saloon is, and I’d like to keep it that way.

In my recent post: Trump–Armed Protesters in Michigan State Capitol Are ‘Very Good People,’ I predicted that this will fragment his base, rather than unite it.  I argued that there must be some voice of reason and moderation in the Republican party, one that refuses to endorse these vulgar criminals.   (more…)

We should begin by noting that it is illegal to carry umbrellas into most state capitol buildings, since they can be used as weapons.  For some reason, this concern does not apply to AR-15s. (more…)

There is so much about America today that is utterly incomprehensible.  Today in Lansing, Michigan, people with assault rifles entered the state capitol building and had altercations like the one depicted here.  Now, I’m a peace-loving fellow, and thus it’s hard for me to recommend violence or engage in it myself, but if I were young and strong and getting this moron’s spit shot into my face, I’m fairly certain I would have beaten him, at least to the point that he no longer posed a threat to my health and safety. Aerials of narwhal

Here’s a short video that explains the pace at which we need to move in terms of clean energy growth to avert climate catastrophe.  The United States is not at all homogeneous in terms of the adoption of renewables and other low-carbon energy sources. (more…)
