President Obama Has a Few More Things To Accomplish

President Obama Has a Few More Deeds To DoThe use of executive clemency in cases of extremely long (often life) prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses shows a great deal of compassion. As I’ve often written, Obama’s not checking out of here without making a great number of things happen in the humanitarian arena, and this is just one more example.

Of course, he may be known to the 2GreenEnergy crowd as the president who accomplished far more than any other in history vis-à-vis the environment (see list below from PleaseCutTheCrap.com).  But it’s lovely to see him perform ad hoc actions of kindness and decency, like the one linked in the paragraph above.

Clearly those who assert that Obama has done nothing worthwhile are wrong; he has done plenty, much of which has nothing to do with energy so it is not listed here. He has even approved a huge amount of money for developing advanced nuclear power technologies. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, he had to do that quietly.

Regarding vehicle economy, there is still a serious loophole, i.e., SUVs and trucks which now account for more vehicle sales than they should. Many people who do not need SUVs and trucks are buying them. I’m convinced that many four door four wheel drive trucks, which use considerably more fuel than cars, are bought mainly to enhance the macho images of their owners. Quite often when I park in a parking lot I end up between two oversize vehicles which, in addition to using too much fuel, make backing out dangerous because they block my vision. When I make a left turn from a left turn only lane and the opposing left turn only lane has one of those oversize vehicles in it, it blocks my view of the opposing traffic. If an oversize vehicle hits a pedestrian, it is likely to do more damage because the pedestrian, instead of being thrown upward, will be thrown forward and be likely to be run over. In an accident with an ordinary car, they inflict more damage because of their greater weight. So, in addition to using more than their share of fuel and thereby emitting more CO2, they are more dangerous to other road users.

Perhaps the problem could be reduced by imposing a greater tax on extra heavy vehicles with an exception made for vehicles used for commercial purposes. That would significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

Good idea. We most certainly choose automobiles that are far more powerful and robust than we actually need.

You’re right, energy and the environment is only one of about 10 areas addressed in the report I linked in the post. Here it is again: http://pleasecutthecrap.com/obama-accomplishments/. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

I agree with the vehicles being too large and I watch people take the biggest vehicle they own to the store to get a cup of coffee instead of taking the smaller car sitting right next to it in the driveway or just making coffee at home.
As I read once and have repeated often, “It only takes one horse power to haul your ass around. The rest of the horsepower is wasted hauling your ego around.”

Actually, I prefer driving smaller vehicles. My 2004 Mazda 3, like other Mazdas, tends to be a driver’s car. It is designed to have quick precise steering and a solid stable feel to it. However, not everyone would like it since many people prefer a softer ride and Mazdas tend to have firm suspension systems which I like. I also like manual transmissions. I’ve driven oversize vehicles and definitely do not like them. I also have a modest sized motorcycle (a Suzuki SV 650) and a bicycle.

At my gym a lot of guys have huge 4-door 4 wheel drive trucks which they pamper as much as some people would pamper a stylish car; they always look impeccable. I very much doubt that they have any good reason to have such large vehicles. I’m convinced that it is to enhance their macho images. There should be some way to discourage the purchase of such vehicles by people who don’t really need them.
