    Yes, he nailed it.

When I was in the sixth grade we had a program called human relations. In it we studied the problems faced by retarded people and how to treat them nicely. We also studied how the treatment of young children influenced their behavior as adults. We also covered different religions to some extent and learned to respect their adherents.

In grade nine we studied how our local, state, and federal government work and learned our responsibilities as citizens. At some point we studied the history of democratic governments beginning with the ancient Greeks. We also read the Magna Carta.

We also studied logic including syllogisms and learned how prejudice can interfere with clear and objective thinking.

I feel very fortunate to have been well educated in these areas. I wonder whether people in other school systems at the time were so fortunate. I also wonder what kids are learning in school now, i.e., whether they are learning what they need to know to be responsible citizens. I have serious doubts.

    Everyone should read
“And here’s another piece on our broken educational system and some related issues.”

More than education is needed. Also fixing the political.

You’re 100% right that everyone should read it, but only a tiny fraction of people will. That’s the challenge right there.

      • Frank Eggers says:

Unfortunately that is right. Too many people mistakenly assume that they get all the information they need from the media.

If people were adequately educated and committed to thinking carefully, objectively, and critically, some of the political problems would not exist.

“The children of today love luxury. They have bad manners and contempt for authority. They show disrespect for elders and love diversion in place of healthy exercise. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, voice opinion loudly. exhibit greed, disrupt polite gentle discourse with loud and raucous music and tyrannize their teachers.

If society is to be saved from decay, youth must be reeducated in the old disciplines…..What is to become of them?”

    Plato, 4th Century BC

Plato was only reiterating Hesiod who forhundred years earlier wrote:

“I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent onthe frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly impatient of restraint ”

It seems not much had changed by the time Peter the Hermit preached in 1274A.D.

“”The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress.”

    Perhaps G.K Chesterton summed it up best when he wrote;

    “G. K. Chesterton:

“I believe what really happens in history is this: the old man is
always wrong; and the young people are always wrong about what is
wrong with him. The practical form it takes is this: that, while the old man may stand by some stupid custom, the young man always attacks it with some theory that turns out to be equally stupid.”

    Thus it was ever so….
