World Reaction to Trump Isn’t Pretty

World Reaction to Trump Isn't PrettyThose of us in the U.S. who are paying attention understand that most Americans regard our new president with a mixture of hostility and terror. But if you want to see some REAL animus from someone elsewhere on the globe, this three-minute video of a speech from an Irish senator is not to be missed.

Here’s what I wrote to a Facebook friend who suggested that an “unthinking share” like this creates greater divisiveness:

First, let me say that there was nothing “unthinking” whatsoever about my decision to share this. Needless to say, I’ve heard your perspective about divisiveness one or twice, and if Trump were just a run-of-the-mill jackass, like Bush 43 for instance, I wouldn’t be “going there.” The problem is that he and his cabinet represent enormous danger to virtually everything America (used to) stand for–certainly everything I care about: environmentalism, peace, social justice, human rights, respect for women, a colorblind police force, free press, religious liberty, and the removal of big money from government. I will not be silent under these circumstances, and you shouldn’t be either.

    Craig,

I notice in your opposition to Donald Trump you have adopted the dubious habit of deciding “the enemy of my enemy, is my friend “!

In the past this has led you to praising some pretty dubious, even abhorrent people. You really should be more careful about those whom you seek as bedfellows.

A ‘Senator’ in the Irish Republic’s political system isn’t the same status as the US or Australia.

The Irish Senate has no real power. It can’t veto or propose legislation, although it can delay legislation for a short period.

Irish Senate members are not directly elected, in fact most are not really elected at all. The Senate’s sixty members are appointed by a complex and weird system which includes many complicated method. (10% are Six elected by the graduates of certain Irish universities.Three by graduates of the University of Dublin,Three by graduates of the National University of Ireland, these individuals must be graduates of those institutions).

Some are political appointments within the gift of the Prime Minister, while others are drawn from a complicated and undemocratic set of ‘special panels’ comprising special interest groups.

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is a former grade school teacher and a militant Left wing firebrand. His views on terrorist activities are to say the least extreme. After complaints from the EU, and even his own his own party, cost him his seat in the lower house, he agreed to control his behavior and after a period in the wilderness was appointed to the Senate with trade union support.

This is a man who as a student leader, praised the action of killing the children of supporters of Northern Ireland (including the children British servicemen) as a means of achieving ultra-nationalist ambitions.

Are you really sure you want to associate with such creatures ?
