Sustainability — Good Followership Is As Important As Good Leadership

Sustainability — Good Followership Is As Important As Good Leadership

I notice that the Marriott hotel chain has instituted a sustainable seafood program called “Future Fish,” making it the first large player in the industry to make a move like this.  Brad Nelson, Marriott’s culinary vice president, notes “The guest is asking, more and more, what the fish is and where it’s coming from.”  By next month, Marriott’s 780 full-service hotels will be sourcing at least 50% of their seafood from certified sustainable and responsible fisheries and aquaculture farms.

It’s unclear whether Marriott’s decision to go in this direction is self-driven, socially responsible action, or a response to consumer demand.  I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, and besides: does it really matter?  The move to sustainability requires good leaders and good followers, and each of us plays a key role as both — sometimes pushing, other times pulling.

  1. Craig – I join you in my disbelief that Electric Transportation is not being pursued more aggressively. You are correct to assume the problem is with special interest from the big oil companies and those businesses that depend on the ICE, internal combustion engine, to make income. I will make my statement to this issue by taking action rather than using words other than to tell the media what we have done after the fact. Imagine a community that is completely off the Grid, using clean, renewable bio-mass, to make clean energy. For all those who live in one of these communities who buy an electric car I will charge it every night, free. That’s Free Fuel. In matter of fact, what if I supplied all the energy for their home also, free, if they have an electric car. We can make it happen. We can do that because or construction techniques will cut home energy consumption in half. You will need to be part of this. Fred Howard
