Humankind's Indifference To Long-Range Issues

Frequent commenter and old friend Arlene Allen writes:

Long cycle events don’t get the attention of the vast majority of us humans. We’re too used to being able to mitigate a situation in real time.

That’s precisely right. We’re not good at long-range planning on our best day, and this is not even a half-decent day, with moneyed interests aggressively distracting us from the grim realities we face.

It would be nice if our leaders would actually lead in this arena, but that’s impossible for two reasons:

1) They’re put into power by those moneyed interests; they’re simply doing what they’re told, and

2) Even if that weren’t the case, the electorate has no appetite for pain. Even absent of the corruption, they will not elect someone whose platform calls for austerity. The party will continue until the liquor runs out.

  1. Well the bottle is getting low, and no one is running to the Liquor store for more (on this planet anyway). You are right, they will party till they are forced to stop. So, does the collapse happen in a corporate/Bank level first or on a Bio level first? I suggest we plan for a Revolution like never before. Lets get out of the main stream market. No TV, Movies, new cars all this distraction. Get Permaculture smart, truly conservative in a way that is with out the excessive non sustainable “Need Stuff” “reality” and get real in a grow our own Veggies, network between our selves form a Quasi Government for our selves. We can side step this dead end path from the ground up. They will come begging for our vote if we are a large enough and show ownership. We can endorse who we want by our dollar vote on what we buy. We can educate our selves on what is the best and vow to shop that way. as a collective movement. Revolution re defined. We can be passive aggressive in our buying habits. Just say no to China Mfg. Products. Say no to anything not absolutely necessary that is not vendors by one of “Us” and what we do not make or do, organize to fix that with better alternatives locally. Create a model and replicate online. I am doing this myself as much as possible to a painful point.
