Renewable Energy and Fossil Fuels – a Clash of the Titans

I had the pleasure to interview the president of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) for my next book project (“Renewable Energy – Following the Money”) just now. Dennis McGinn (pictured here, second from left) is a retired vice admiral from the US Navy, and an incredibly articulate spokesperson for our industry. Though I found our talk quite interesting and multi-dimensional, I’ll summarize it in a few high-level bullet points:

• Yes, renewable energy flies in the teeth of the most powerful industry on the planet – forces that have done a good job in developing control over the legislative process.

• Thus it’s completely unrealistic to expect to be handed a level playing field; the clean energy people have to fight hard to create that environment.

• But that is exactly what is happening, as the case for renewables becomes stronger and more apparent to an increasing number of voters.

• Dennis is optimistic that clean energy will be able to replace a large part of our fossil fuel consumption in a reasonable period of time, based on the sheer strength of the market forces that are building each day.

I complimented him on his temperament. “Don’t you ever get angry?” I asked. “You take on some real evil, and some first-rate stupidity every day.  You’re dealing with senators who are trying to stop renewables, even at the expense of the Navy’s capacity to defend our country, and you seem totally cool.” He chuckled kindly, but this guy’s “just the facts, ma’am” demeanor really does impress me.

I know I’ve mentioned previously that Dennis’ appreciation for fact (versus opinion) was the driving force behind the new website (appropriate named) EnergyFactCheck.org.  I hope you’ll check it out, and visit frequently, as it features a “daily update.”

  1. I have met Capt. Marko Medved and other officers that all have a calm position on this. I am not suggesting they are soft either, just one look and a few comments with them and you know why they are respected as they are. I was a hippie, avoided Nam, never had endless respect for the Military till I met some of these officers. Now I am very proud I have met them. I am now ashamed of the Congress that opposes them. The knowledge these guys have and reasons they are “Green” is way beyond the Congress that betrays us with the money paid to them by Lobbyists.
The enemy is within, A Congressional Candidate told me once, he left the Military to fight in Congress where he said the problem is.

You write: “The enemy is within” in reference to the lobbyists and the corruption of our democracy.

You have nailed it. We’ve come to the point at which the power of money seems to have overwhelmed our sense of what’s right. This, btw, is exactly what took down the Romans.
