Brown Goes Green

I often mention FedEx and how impressed I am with some of their more progressive efforts in corporate sustainability.  I should also mention that their rival, UPS, is working hard in the same direction.  As noted here, “Brown” is currently in the process of octupling (a word you don’t see often) their solar power capacity from 360 kilowatts to 2.76 megawatts.  Perhaps more interestingly, they like to own the PV on their roofs, rather than contract it out to a third party.

Don’t overlook natural gas as a viable way to reduce transportation related green house gas emissions. Especially I am refering to the biogas generation from landfills.
Waste management is taking the lead in converting their garbage trucks to run on natural gas. Much of this gas is generated from their landfills. It makes good sense and cents to utilize this resource instead of emitting it to the atmosphere. The CO2 final emission is way less potent of a green house gas than methane.
It would make less sense to convert their fleet to EV mode under these circumstances. I just wanted to point out that choice of green energy implementation is largely situation driven. What may be great for delivering mail is not necessarily the right choice for hauling garbage.
