Shipping Containers as Sustainable Architecture

Please check out this article that a friend sent me on the use of shipping containers are the “guts” for small homes. I’d seen this concept applied to school rooms – for which I think, frankly, it’s a much better idea than in home building.  The validity of the whole idea is based on a couple of lucky facts:

• Shipping containers come to the U.S. in amazing numbers from Asia, and are either stockpiled here or returned empty – neither of which represents a happy, eco-friendly solution.

• These little babies are structurally quite strong – so much so that one can replace most of three of the four walls with glass windows and doors without destroying the structural integrity.

• There are hundreds of case studies that show that children learn far better when they’re not shut up into artificially lighted rooms with tiny windows; the more exposed kids are to the outdoors, the better their learning experience will be.

If anyone happens to be interested in an investment in this concept, please let me know; I know some people who know some people ….

My brother in law works here where they have some other uses for shipping containers:

  2. Have to say, instead of sending them back you can convert them into houses, storage solutions, toilets and much more. Shipping containers have massive uses especially for container conversions.
