Vegan_Restaurant_HannoverWhen you typically hear people talk about “green restaurants,” you might assume it’s a conversation regarding vegetarian places to eat. However, a green restaurant actually refers to a business that prides itself on being run in an eco-friendly way. Over the years, many restaurants around the world have made a conscious shift and started to utilize environmentally friendly ways to carry out their normal day-to-day business practices, whether it’s recycling waste, sourcing quality ingredients from conscientious food producers, pollution prevention, or by only using energy-efficient appliances. You can read more about green restaurants here.

If you are passionate about living an environmentally aware lifestyle and would like to start eating out at restaurants, bistros and cafés that think, feel and care about the planet as much as you do, here are five Ohio-based green restaurants for you to try out.

Noodlecat This stylish Japanese-American eatery offers a vast array of meaty, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free and to-go dishes. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try the scrumptious Ohio Smoked Beef Brisket Ramen, or the delectable Smoked Tomato Coconut Curry with tofu and organic rice noodles. Their menu states that “Noodlecat recreates traditionally inspired flavors using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients following sustainable business practices in all areas of restaurant operation.”

Table 45 Restaurant & Bar – A fine dining establishment that oozes style, sophistication and an innate distinctiveness, Table 45’s website states that Chef Zachary Bruell “is pushing the envelope with an entirely new concept called World Cuisine – a cross-cultural blend of cooking techniques that combines various styles, cultures and ingredients from North Africa, South America, Europe and Asia.” The location itself boasts a unique layout: “Each of the restaurant’s five zones is designed for different moods, from quiet and intimate to casual and high energy.” The Braised Short Ribs, Seared Sea Scallops, or Tandoori Pork Tenderloin are all great choices!

Kenyon Inn & Restaurant – Located on the Kenyon College campus, the 4-star Kenyon Inn & Restaurant offers a sumptuously relaxed ambiance and breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Their breakfast eggs are free-range and sourced from the local grounds of Kenyon Farm, while the lunch menu offers a succulent Greek Lamb Burger stuffed with Kalamata olives, red onion, spinach and roasted red pepper. When it comes to dinnertime entrées, the Tequila Shrimp with Cilantro Lime Pesto, Sweet Thai Chicken stuffed with goats cheese, or Bean and Roasted Tomato Quinoa served with a salsa verde will all make your taste buds tingle.

The Greenhouse Tavern – Their menu humbly states that “Chef Jonathon Sawyer brings love and happiness to each plate that is put out of the tavern’s kitchen. Using local produce, protein, and grain Chef Sawyer supports our revitalizing economy in Cleveland,” the Greenhouse’s website even has a cute mantra to highlight its devotion to food as well as its love to those who imbibe: “vegan veg gluten free / carnivore or herbivore / you’re all right with me.” Try the Crispy Chicken Wings Confit, Pan Seared Lake Fish, or Foie Gras Steamed Clams – you can thank me later!

C2 Restaurant – C2’s website proudly proclaims that its restaurant “offers diners a respite from their busy day, with a soft buttery color palate, natural wood surfaces and an uncluttered, uncomplicated feel – plus a lush, green patio for seasonal outdoor dining,” and they’re not joking! Many visitors turn up especially at dinnertime so they can savor the Marinated Flatiron Steak served with Red Wine Shallot Butter and Pesto Whipped Potatoes. However, they always make sure they leave enough room to dig into either the Key Lime Cheesecake with Raspberry Coulis, or the Chocolate Bundt Cake served with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Caramel for dessert.
