From Guest Blogger Jenny Richards: Quick And Easy Tips on How You Can Switch to a Green Website Host

There is a lot of talk around being environmentally conscious and all of us being responsible for both the problem of and solution to global warming. Now, at the risk of sounding like a crazy tree hugger, the world’s most powerful governments have done little to curb global warming. There has been a lot of talk and not much action, and most green development reviews agree on this.

The time is now!

Well, while we may not be leaders of governments, we can choose to put our money where our mouths are and take a stand for the environment. After all, we are all living in it and we are the ones who are responsible to fix it.

So what can web developers do? One of the major things is choosing a green host. Green hosting is carbon neutral, meaning that it has no carbon footprint. So does it mean that your website will not be using power? No, it means offsetting the carbon produced by creating and/or supporting environmentally friendly alternatives such as planting trees.

It’s not too late

This is something a standard web host may not be able to provide so you need to make that choice before you set up your website. However, if you currently link to a standard web host and you would like to move to a ‘green’ host, then here is what you can do.

  1. Find the best ‘green’ host for you

All green web hosting services are not the same so you need to choose one that suits your site. Some services are better for small business while others can handle larger businesses that are constantly expanding. Once you find the best host, create a new website but do not cancel your old contract just yet, okay?

  1. Move from the old website to the new one

You need to move content from the old website into the new one. You may need a web master for this if you cannot do it yourself to make sure it is done well. Some green web hosts provide instructions on how to do this quickly and easily so do not feel overwhelmed by this.

  1. Create a backup

Make sure to back up everything on your computer and on a cloud because losing that data can cause serious damage to your business and website.

  1. Change your domain

The next thing you will need to do is change the settings of your DNS and point your domain to the new green website. This usually takes 48 hours to complete and some green hosts may offer to do this for you free, or else give your clear direction on how you can do it yourself.

  1. Now you can cancel the old contract

Only after you are all set to go with your new green website, can you happily cancel the contract you had with the old host.

It is not too hard. In addition, there is not collateral damage to your business or website. So why have you not done this already?
