“30 Different Nationalities Co-exist in Our School in an Atmosphere of Cooperation and Mutual Respect” – That Alone Is Worth Reading About  At least once a week, I get a request from someone, somewhere in the world, asking about our 2GreenEnergy internships.  Over the years, 10 or so of these have worked out, each one an utter delight.  I’ve made many fine new friends, these young people have learned a great deal and improved their skills in researching and writing, and the world is a better informed place as a result of their work.

Having said that, most requests don’t work out.  Some people, understandably, either want to be paid for their work as interns, or want to see a direct career path into a large company that represents a good fit for a career aspiration: perhaps environmental economics, engineering, law, politics, physics, environmental science, marine biology, international relations, etc.

The reason I’m publishing this request (without the applicant’s name, of course) is that it’s so exotic.  It was an opportunity for me to learn a bit about a part of the world that one seldom hears about (note the links I’ve inserted).

It’s also gratifying to read a request like this that’s written in decent English; I made very few minor edits.  Some of these show such a weak command of the language that I’m tempted to tell the applicant: regardless of your specific interests, the very next action you need to take to further your career is sharpening your writing skills.

Dear Sir / Madam, I am currently studying the Certificate of Higher Education in Renewable Energy technician at Zonzamas High School and I am writing to apply for a trainee placement in your company in order to complete this last year of my course. I would like to undertake my training in the field I’m being prepared for, which is renewable energy.

School Zonzamas High School is the largest state high-education school on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and is a ECHE 2014-2015 centre. It boasts more than 20 years’ experience in further education and is proud to enjoy an excellent reputation. More than 30 different nationalities co-exist in our school in an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. Lanzarote was named Biosphere Reserve in 1993 and belongs to the Canarian Archipelago, in the outermost regions of the EU. The School was awarded the ISO 9001:2008 quality certification in 2005 which has been consistently renewed since, and it has also earned the EFQM+300 certificate. We are currently integrated in the ACEMEC school alliance backed by the Canarian Autonomous Community and as a member school we work within the European Framework for Quality Guarantee in Technical Education.

I am certain I have made the right decision in choosing your company for my training and for my part, I can offer enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn. I am a very outgoing person who enjoys studying in a multi-cultural learning environment and sharing experiences with people from different nationalities. I also strive to be focused and hardworking and my peers tell me I am a reliable friend and classmate. Travelling abroad and gaining new experiences and knowledge would mean a big challenge in my academic, personal and future professional life.

I attach my Europass for your reference. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the address below. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks for writing.  I would love to have a person of your caliber and credentials perform an internship for us at 2GreenEnergy, but regrettably we can’t pay you.  If that’s a deal-breaker, I understand.  But if it’s not, I encourage you to call or write back and discuss the subject with me.

Such a program would be richly rewarding – not only for you, but for the world as well.  I would personally direct you in research and writing reports that will serve to illuminate the truth about the world’s migration to clean energy.  It’s pretty cool stuff, and we’d love to have your help.

Again, if you’re interested, please let me know.

Best regards,

Craig
