Kansas Says Goodbye To Its Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards

Kansas Says Goodbye To Its Renewable Energy Portfolio StandardsThe Kansas state legislature has passed a Koch Industries-sponsored bill that does away with the state’s clean energy requirements for electric utilities and replaces them with a voluntary goal.

According to the article, the state’s environmental groups aren’t happy, which is predictable. In fact, if there is any surprise here, it’s that environmental groups exist in Kansas at all.

For those of you outside the U.S. who might not understand this remark, Kansas is arguably the most regressive state in our Union.  Our news is littered with horror stories about the results of their tax cuts.  Revenue in the 2014 fiscal year came in $333 million below projections—and nearly $700 million below the 2013 levels.  Even the conservative Wall Street Journal looks askance.

And here’s a piece on the Koch Brothers’ attempt to infiltrate the state’s public schools with their libertarian message.

Yikes…a good place to avoid.

The Wichita Eagle reported last year that, “Kansas ranked as one of the five worst states for business establishment creation between 2009 and 2012. Kansas also ranks near the bottom when it comes to growth in women opening businesses, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Kansas ranks 42nd in the nation in public health funding. Last year the “America’s Health Rankings” from the United Health Foundation provide a grading of 30 health measures.

Dr. Rhonda Randall, the foundation’s chief health adviser, said there’s no mistaking the trend for Kansas. “Kansas has had a steady decline, from about 10 or 11 in that initial 1990 rank to rank 27th in this most recent year’s report,” Randall said.
