Would a Trump Presidency Be Entertaining?

Would a Trump Presidency Be Entertaining?I’ve mentioned that I volunteer to answer questions on renewable energy on the popular website Quora.com.  I have to say that the feed contains questions that are actually far more interesting than clean energy per se.  Here’s one from this morning, along with my response:

Would a Trump presidency be more entertaining than disastrous?

It would be entertaining in two distinct, though limited senses:

The way we find freeway accidents “entertaining,” i.e., some people have a ghoulish fascination, actually hoping to see carnage when they pass by.   Of course, there’s no way to know if Trump would do any of the batcrap crazy things he claims he will, but if he did, there would be plenty of blood to gape at.

If by “entertaining” you mean “amusing,” which I’m sure you do, I suppose it depends on your sense of humor.  I’ve run across people who say that they are eager to see a Trump presidency because it will enable them to see how completely “effed-up” our society can get (war crimes—widespread torture and “taking out” the families of combatants–nuclear war, the militarization of our domestic society, state-supported persecution of religious sects, an economy that could easily implode, and a Supreme Court that will guarantee the regression of all progressive ideals by 50 – 75 years).

I happen not to share this sense of humor, and thus I would derive little enjoyment from all this, simply because of the mass suffering it would engender.  Yet I have to admit that I get the point these people are making.  I suppose if you have a great deal of both money and indifference to misery, this really could be quite funny indeed.

Amusing and disastrous are not necessarily mutually exclusive. However, I greatly fear the serious damage that Trump could cause.

It may be that cooler heads would be fairly successful at reigning in Trump’s impulsive behavior, but probably not 100% successful. He could change the composition of the Supreme Court resulting in damage lasting for decades. His impulsiveness could start a war. His effect on foreign relations would be unpredictable. Probably Trump would be seen by foreign leaders and citizens for what he is and see his election as a fluke.

Let us hope that we will not have to deal with Trump as president.
