Germany Replaces Nuclear with Solar and Wind, Maintains Reliance on Coal

showimage.ashxFor some reason, Germany’s people are terrified of nuclear energy, which is especially weird in that they live right across the Rhine from a country that has generated a huge majority of its energy from nuclear, without incident, for half a century.  As a result of this paranoia, they’ve made the horrific decision to maintain their consumption of coal, while replacing low-carbon nuclear with low-carbon renewables.

As I’ve mentioned, Germany’s state department sent an emissary to meet with me and a few dozen other authors of books on energy to ask advice.  Unfortunately, that was before Fukushima, the event that precipitated this tragic decision.  Nuclear is an absolute requirement if this civilization is to curtail greenhouse emissions; I wish I had been in a position to influence their thinking.

  1. That’s terrible! Everyone needs to want to change if we want change to be possible! If one country decides to continue emitting carbon, then we won’t ever truly be able to stop climate change(without taking carbon from the atmosphere)!

    Craig,

At long last you seem to have come to your senses !

Germany has been forced to reopen old mines and even older Coal Fired power Generation because of the inadequate capacity of Wind and Solar.

Despite hundreds of billions spent on Wind and Solar, all that has been achieved is very high energy prices and being forced to import nuclear for from neighbors.

The stubbornness of the German Federal Government refuses to deploy proper clean(er) coal technology,as it would symbolize a defeat for “Energiewende” ! So the deception continues.
