Indigenous Groups, Environmentalists Score Rare Victory

This may sound radical, but some people suggest that continuing to build out the fossil fuel infrastructure might not be such a good idea, given the horrific environmental consequences: water pollution, lung damage, climate change, ocean acidification, loss of biodiversity, and so forth.  Don’t these people understand that money makes the world go ’round?

Seriously, the good guys just won a battle: Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal has quashed the government’s approvals to build the Trans Mountain expansion project.

From this article: In the decision released Thursday, and written by Justice Eleanor Dawson, the court found the National Energy Board’s assessment of the project was so flawed that it should not have been relied on by the federal cabinet when it gave final approval to proceed in November 2016.  The certificate approving construction and operation of the project has been nullified, leaving the project in legal limbo until the energy regulator and the government reassess their approvals to satisfy the court’s demands.

Such good news happens seldom, but today, the indigenous groups and environmentalists who opposed the $7.4-billion project are smiling; it’s always nice to see hard work paying off. Congratulations to all who made it happen.

  1. It’s great that the good guys won one. More often than not, the bad guys get away because of corruption and money. It’s terrible to think that most people only care about money, especially since money won’t matter if we’re at the bottom of the sea.
