Shocking Report: Less Snowfall Reduces Ski Revenues, Employment

ski-weather-and-investing-2017Now that’s astonishing.  In the Western U.S., the droughts fueled by climate change have resulted in reduced snowfall, which in turn, has damaged the ski industry.  It’s like a report I read some time back that concluded unprotected teen sex caused unwanted pregnancies among high school girls.

    Craig,

The 2016/ 2017 Squaw Valley, CA, ski season was a record-breaking snowfall total. They called it SNOWMAGEDDON, Janu-BURIED, Febru-BURIED, Miracle March, Awesome April, May Madness, and even June & July.s. Many resorts extended their seasons as Squaw Valley stayed open past 4th of July for the first time in history.

In the past 20 years, snowfalls in:

680” Paradise Rainier Ranger Station, Washington
    552” Thompson Pass, Alaska
    530” Mt. Baker Lodge, Washington
    530” Crater Lake, Oregon
    516” Alta, Utah
    471” Soda Springs, California
    445” Tamarack, California
    442” Stampede Pass, Washington
    436” Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado
    429” Silver Lake, Brighton, Utah

The most comprehensive peer reviewed study yet compiled by the American Meteorological Society ‘Trend Identification in Twentieth-Century U.S. Snowfall: The Challenges” edited by Dr Kenneth E. Kunkel and Dr Michael A. Palecki, don’t seem to agree with the opinions of a passionate group of outdoor climate advocates activists, led by college drop out, marijuana farmer and professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, the founder of “Protect Our Winters”.

The effect of development taking place in certain Snow fields, is seldom mentioned when discussing the effects on snowfalls and retention of snow, but can be a significant factor.
