Climate Scientist Speaking in Santa Barbara

Slide3If you happen to be within a train ride of Santa Barbara, you may want to join me this Thursday in checking out a talk by Katharine Hayhoe at Westmont College, an extremely high-end interdenominational Christian liberal arts college.  The work of Dr. Hayhoe (PhD in atmospheric science) focuses on the effects of climate change and creating ways for businesses to be environmentally friendly. She also writes books encompassing topics of climate science, communication and faith, including her most recent, “A Climate for a Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions.”

PBS Digital Studios distributes her video series, “Global Weirding: Climate, Politics, and Religion with Katharine Hayhoe,” and she has recorded a TED Talk, “The Most Important Thing You  Can Do to Fight Climate Change: Talk  About It.”

I love that phrase: “global weirding,” if only that reflects the strange relationship between religion and science, at least in the U.S.  For readers who live elsewhere, it’s actually hard to describe this.  Though most of our religious people are wonderfully kind and intelligent people, we have a disproportionately large population of fundamentalist “evangelical” Christians who, ironically, live their lives in ways that Jesus Christ could not have possibly accepted.

I don’t know what Dr. Hayhoe will say in her talk, but I’m fairly certain it won’t be that only God can affect the Earth’s capacity to support life, that the children of desperate parents seeking asylum in the U.S. should be separated from their mothers and fathers and locked up, that homosexuals should be “humanely” executed, or that Donald Trump is a gift from God.  Just taking a guess here.

    Craig,

You really live in a alternate earth don’t you ?

Where on earth did you get the idea “homosexuals should be executed, “humanely” or otherwise and why would you connect such a idea wit President Trump?

Separating children from unidentified and undocumented adults who in custody for committing an illegal act, is not only widely practiced around the world, but a “duty of care” by the authorities. This practice was widely enforced by the Obama administration, without comment, and only became an issue when continued by the Trump administration.

The tragic reality of illegal migration is something of which you seem blithely (or deliberately)ignorant.

These children may be kidnapped or orphaned, or even trafficked into slavery, sexual, drug or sweated labour. Babes are sold. Children and young teenagers, are often mere cattle, smuggled across the border so organs can be illegally harvested as the bodies will not be missed.

around 60% of the young females, and 20% of boys, will have been sexually assaulted (some many, many times)and at least 40% will have contracted some form of contagious venereal disease. Sadly, some of these diseases may be “super bugs” and will be extremely difficult to treat effectively.

It’s not just the huge burden to the US taxpayer and US health system, but the reluctance of migrants to admit the event which led to this condition. Many children slip pass through the system with health problem, including TB and other diseases undetected.

Children taken into “care custody” ,automatically receive complete medical assessment.

You may feel your sentimental approach is kind, but in fact the outcome of your irresponsible advocacy is exceedingly cruel to hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants each year.

Wake up! take off your rose tinted glasses and try to comprehend reality ! (However unpleasant).
