Classmates Sometimes Make Us Proud

iFJvLFOn_400x400When you spend four college years with a class of about 400, you get to know a great many of them, from course work inside and outside your major, dorm life, sports, fraternities, and other social activities.  A great many of them will be on your Christmas card list for the rest of your lives, but only a very few will make you genuinely proud.

Now commissioner of Florida’s Broward County Q. C. “Beam” Furr, serving just shy of two million people, has dedicated his life to making a difference in local governance, and has been on the right side of every issue, as far as I can tell.

Most obvious is his non-negotiable position on environmental protection, as presented in this story on the recently approved oil exploration in the Everglades, excerpted here:

Next to the airboats at the entrance to Everglades Holiday Park, about thirty people from The Sierra Club, the Broward County League of Women Voters, and other environmentalist groups stood together holding signs Tuesday that read “Not Here, Not Now, Not Everglades.”

Who was there supporting them?   You guessed it.  “As we look out on the Everglades on this beautiful day, it’s hard to believe that someone would even consider spoiling this, but they are,” Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr said.

    Craig,

I’m delighted to see you recognize your friends call to public life with such enthusiasm.

Just a couple of points, firstly your friend is just one of nine elected commissioners. Secondly, Broward County is, and always has been a Democrat stronghold.

Thirdly, and more important when you write ” has been on the right side of every issue, what you really mean is he’s been on the side you agree with, not necessarily “the right side” :).
