World’s Second-largest Ferry System Switching from Diesel to Batteries, Charged Largely with Hydro

Large marine vessels powered by bunker diesel have horrendous environmental footprints.

That’s why it’s such excellent news that government-owned Washington State Ferries, the second-largest ferry system in the world, is switching from diesel to batteries amid a growing trend toward electrification in shipping.  From the GreenTech Media article linked above:

“This is a good idea because it quiets the boats [while] obviously removing tons of diesel fuel emissions. But even if you’re not an environmentalist, this is a good idea for the taxpayer because we expect it to pay for itself relatively quickly, based on the price of fuel. It saves millions of dollars annually.”

More good news.

    Craig,

It’s great news, but by no means a “done deal”.

In theory, the refitting should prove successful, but reality is another matter.

Still, I really wish the guys well and figures crossed for a successful conversion.

Well done Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State for his support and initiative.
