Most People Are Too Desperate To Be Politically Active

What would the American political scene be like if more people had the financial resources and emotional bandwidth required to immerse themselves into it?

Think about this, for example:

The vast majority (80%) of Americans (nearly all democrats, but plenty of Republicans) think that as a country, the United States should put more emphasis on producing domestic energy from solar.

91% of Americans want universal background checks for prospective gun owners.  That’s almost everyone.  Now, throw in the fact that there is a mass shooting (three+ victims in a single shooting) somewhere in this country at the rate of more than one per day (a total of 31 such incidents in the first 28 days of December).

Where’s the outrage?

As shown above, the people at “The Story of Stuff” suggest that people are too suppressed to get involved.  Sure makes sense to me.

    Craig,

What makes no sense to me, is where do you get these statistics?

Internet polls to “Dorothy Dix” questions will always produce skewed results, ensuring only a “manufactured conclusion,

“Universal background checks” wouldn’t be effective. Simply create a huge new bureaucracy and not save one life.

Do you really imagine a person dreaming of mass murder will be deterred by not having the right paperwork? In a nation with at least 200 million illegal firearms, do you really believe a determined killer can’t buy a gun ?

Mopst people aren’t activists because they have commonsense.

    Craig,

Anton Wallace, 64, and Richard White, 67 were killed by a mentally disturbed shooter while attending a Church service in Texas. The killer was armed with an illegally obtained weapon.

He may have killed many more in the crowded church, but for being shot dead by two other parishioners carrying legally concealed firearms.

In September, Texas passed a new law permitting licensed handgun owners to carry weapons in places of worship, funerals etc.

No law or act of gun control could have prevented the mentally deranged Keith Thomas Kinnunen from his murderous act in the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas.

The tragedy was only lessened by the accuracy of one parishioner who hit the gunman in the head with his first shot.

Even sadder is the statement by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton encouraging other states to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons for self-defence.

“This is the model for the future,” he said.

Attorney General Ken Paxton reminded his audience of the 26 people who were killed when a gunman opened fire at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, during a Sunday service.

Paxton said the new law had clearly worked and saved many lives in this shooting instance.

What is really sad, is while democrats and others squabble about ineffective gun control in the hope that by passing laws they can be seen to “be doing something”, no one seems to be interested in addressing the mental health issues that motivate these gunmen.
