Covid-19: Emotions Run High

A reader, “Maria,” and I are having a conversation that may be of interest.

Maria:  The US fatality rate for Covid-19 is less than 1% — it’s 0.7 – 0.8%. Precautions? Yes, by all means! Beyond that we have to get real about this, my friends. The best place to start is by shutting off the TVs, then sign this petition to lift State Executive Orders for “shelter-in” and “restaurant restrictions,” on the basis that they violate the First Amendment right to free assembly, and not excluding religious events violate our right to exercise our religions.

CraigI need to think about this. We can ignore the direction that our scientists are begging us to take, and act according to ideas of some uninformed people who signed a petition. I’m just not sure that’s a strong idea.

Maria: Thanks for weighing in. You misunderstood what I said: “Precautions? Yes, by all means!” What I am saying is that for the absolutely low fatality rate of this virus, I think we all know know how to wash our hands, do social distancing, etc., and we are fully capable of maintaining these things. The states should not be restricting our movement, as that is unconstitutional.
Craig: Well fortunately for the health and safety of 330 million Americans, that’s a fringe viewpoint, to put it kindly.
Maria: How is it a fringe viewpoint? Are we useless POS’s who don’t know how to wipe our own behinds?
Craig: The vast majority of Americans believe that we should act according to the direction of our doctors and scientists, who are unanimous in telling us that failure to comply with their suggestions will result in runaway infection rates.
Maria: Thanks for the input. I’ll continue to do my independent thinking and not be a lemming.
Craig: “Independent thinking,” ignoring science, call it what you will, is fine when it’s only your own health at stake; you have every right, at least as far as I’m concerned, to put your own health at risk.  Sadly, that’s not the case here, and I think you’ll be hard-pressed to defend your right to endanger other people.
