Message from Germany Offers Condolences

The comment at left is typical of those I’ve gotten frequently over the past few years from people outside the U.S.  Sure, it expresses disdain, but it’s actually more about pity than it is about contempt.

IMO, this guy nailed it perfectly: it’s 100% appropriate to feel sorry for educated Americans who live in a country with tens of millions of selfish morons, and to have to put up with all the harm they produce on a daily basis. Until COVID-19, most of this was either indirect, e.g., the long-term environmental damage from the gas-guzzlers they drive and the plastic they use, or it was directed against someone else:  parents whose kids are shot in schools, four-year-olds separated from their parents and locked in cages, unarmed black men killed at the hands of the police, Muslims, gays, etc.

Now, as this fellow from Germany points out, while the rest of the world has re-opened, we (the entire United States) remains under quarantine, and for an indefinite period of time.   How hard would it have been for Americans to have behaved with decency?
