In Many Ways, It’s Good Versus Evil

As I’ve mentioned, my mom is a life-long conservative Republican, and now in her elder years, unfortunately, a Fox News devotee.  Nonetheless, we have extremely civil and mutually respectful discussions on politics.

One of her observations of me, is that, regrettably, I regard people who disagree with me as “bad human beings.”  I have to admit this is true, if that point of disagreement is something with heavy moral implications.  (Obviously, I’m fine with people who dislike my favored art, music, literature, outdoor activities, brands of beer, etc.)

As suggested in the meme here, this whole deal with Trump comes down to good and evil.  I’m glad to report that Mom doesn’t participate in the very worst of what Trump represents, but I’m not afraid of saying that I have nothing but contempt for people who embrace racial violence, cruelty, wanton environmental destruction, pathological lying, and complete indifference to the suffering of others.

We need to be tolerant of everything except intolerance.  This is because of the so-called “paradox of tolerance,” which states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant.
