The US needs mechanisms similar to the UK Independent Police Complaints Commission.

In the UK, when an allegation is made of misconduct by a police officer, it is not down to that officer’s police department to investigate the allegation, but rather a separate investigating body with robust powers to investigate the police.

To a considerable degree, this prevents complaints being dismissed without proper investigation, or the kind of closing of ranks which often happens in the US when complaints are I understand often investigated in the precinct of the officers against whom the complaint is made!

Not saying our system is perfect, but it is I believe substantially less prone to “letting police officers get away with murder” – both figuratively and literally
