Newsmax: No Evidence the 2020 Election Was Rigged

From NBC News:

Facing a defamation lawsuit, conservative television outlet Newsmax on Friday apologized to Dominion Voting Systems security director Eric Coomer and backed off claims that he manipulated voting machines and counts to thwart the re-election of President Donald Trump.

“Newsmax has found no evidence that Dr. Coomer interfered with Dominion voting machines or voting software in any way, nor that Dr. Coomer ever claimed to have done so,” it said in a statement. “Nor has Newsmax found any evidence that Dr. Coomer ever participated in any conversation with members of ‘Antifa,’ nor that he was directly involved with any partisan political organization.” There has been no evidence that the election was rigged.

Coomer said in December that he received death threats after his photo, home address and details about his family circulated on right-wing websites. “It’s terrifying,” he said.

After the apology, which was posted on Newsmax’s site and set to air on its cable channel, Coomer dropped the outlet from a defamation suit that also names the Trump campaign, onetime Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell (shown above), conservative outlet One America News Network and others.

The suit, filed in Denver County, Colorado, court, is otherwise ongoing.

Dominion has also filed multiple federal defamation suits against Fox News, Trump supporter Mike Lindell of MyPillow, Giuliani and Powell that seek billions of dollars in damages.

The voting technology company’s CEO, John Poulos, said in a March 26 statement that Fox News’ on-air claims have “caused us severe damage and undermined trust in American democratic institutions.”

The network has denied any wrongdoing.

“FOX News Media is proud of our 2020 election coverage, which stands in the highest tradition of American journalism, and will vigorously defend against this baseless lawsuit in court,” a Fox spokesperson said at the time.

Powell’s lawyers have argued in court that “no reasonable person” would believe her conspiracy theories and claims about Dominion having a role in an election that Trump has insisted, with no evidence, was rigged against him.

Newsmax’s apology Friday makes clear that claims that Trump won the election are not true.

“Newsmax would like to clarify its coverage of Dr. Coomer and note that while Newsmax initially covered claims by President Trump’s lawyers, supporters and others that Dr. Coomer played a role in manipulating Dominion voting machines, Dominion voting software, and the final vote counts in the 2020 presidential election, Newsmax subsequently found no evidence that such allegations were true,” the outlet said.

“Many of the states whose results were contested by the Trump campaign after the November 2020 election have conducted extensive recounts and audits,” it continued, “and each of these states certified the results as legal and final.

A few observations:

Here, Newsmax has shown what happens when $1.3 billion is on the line and all the evidence points to your losing a crystal clear defamation case.   You admit the truth, turn the other way, and run.

Fox News is pursuing a strategy that has proven effective in the past: claiming to a legitimate news source at all times except when defending itself in cases like this one, and taking the tack that “no reasonable person would believe their (bull****) claims.”  That this has actually worked for them in court is astonishing.  It’s equivalent to saying the their 20+ million viewers are not reasonable people.  They may be gullible and hateful, but this wouldn’t work for me if I were hearing the case.  I would ask for a two-question survey to be conducted of a random sample of viewers: “Would you say that you’re a reasonable or an unreasonable person?” and “How much credence do you put in the veracity (that means truth) of Fox News’ stories?

It is unlikely that Newsmax’s apology will have too much impact on the QAnon people and the others who believe the “stolen election” narrative.  They don’t trust NBC or any other member of the mainstream media composed of thousands of news agencies all around the globe, and regard all this as “fake news.”  This sums up where we are in the country, and how intractable this problem is.  We have tens of millions of people living among us who lack the intellectual equipment to see that they’ve been conned, and there’s really no  way to turn this around.
