What’s going to happen to Trump’s presidency is anyone’s guess. As the meme here suggests, it’s very unlikely that rule of law is going to go by the wayside in the U.S., merely because we happen to have a criminal would-be autocrat in the White House. We have a constitution that protects us from this very eventuality.

GM is ceasing production of the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt, and their explanation seems to hold water: given the significant developments in pure, battery EVs and the build-out of the nation’s charging infrastructure, there is an ever-diminishing demand for gasoline-powered range-extenders. Implied in the meme here is the notion that the fossil fuel industry is good for the economy, but let’s examine that. It certainly has been true historically, in fact, most of the developments over the past couple hundred years that have made our lives longer, healthier, as well as more pleasant and convenient came as a direct or indirect result of the cheap energy that coal, oil and natural gas provided. Now that’s astonishing. In the Western U.S., the droughts fueled by climate change have resulted in reduced snowfall, which in turn, has damaged the ski industry. It’s like a report I read some time back that concluded unprotected teen sex caused unwanted pregnancies among high school girls.
Our civilization may decide to take care of our environment because it’s the right thing to do. More likely, however, we’ll wind up with cleantech because of its relative affordability vs. things like coal-fired power plants. (more…)
