Electric Transportation Isn’t a Free Lunch
As cars and trucks with internal combustion engines give way to electric transportation, a great deal needs to be celebrated. Certainly the environmental gains are important, but probably no more than ridding ourselves of the horrific geopolitics of oil.
And it’s most definitely happening. As Aljazeera reports here, “Big corporations and car manufacturers are ditching combustion engines, with Toyota saying it will have an electrified or hybrid version of all vehicles by 2025.” They add, quite correctly, “But there is a dark side to this revolution.” (more…)

Some of our frequent commenters like to take me to task for what they call my “idealistic” statements to the effect that our world is right around the corner from affordable, unsubsidized clean energy. Their push-back is understandable, given that I’m simply a journalist in the field of energy and, I suppose, an advocate for renewables. After all, bold affirmations of key trends tend to mean more when they come from the very pinnacle of the energy industry itself. 
Senator Markey’s point is a good one: clean energy is a revolution (or an evolution) away from the antiquated ways of old. Like all such societal changes made for the better over the 10,000 years of human civilization, we learned, we innovated, and we improved our quality of life.

A typical corporate office is not exactly the epitome of sustainability. Energy-sucking equipment purrs the whole day, piles of paperwork lie around, air conditioning systems work extra hours. But it does not have to be this way: there are many opportunities to save energy and reduce the environmental footprint. 
There are many ways that you can try to be greener and reduce your energy consumption. You can take the bicycle instead of the car, recycle your home waste and compost your waste food. Making your home itself greener and more energy efficient place doesn’t necessarily mean adding solar panels or a new boiler, there are other smaller things you can do. 
Obviously, our country and the world as a whole would be better off if honest and well qualified people were appointed to key cabinet posts. But the converse isn’t always true, i.e., it seems that there are occasions in which having a total imbecile serve in a job that requires an understanding of basic science actually serves to highlight how completely dysfunctional the current administration is, perhaps helping to bring it to a premature end.
