hunt30n-9-webShown here: Donald Trump, Jr., in one hand, showing off the tail of a elephant he’d just killed in East Africa, in the other, the knife he’s used in dismembering the corpse.

A Zimbabwean emissary to the climate conference in Bonn commented this morning, that until he learned about Trump’s lifting of the Obama-era ban in importing elephant trophies, he was positive that there was nothing further that the current administration in the U.S. could do to horrify him.

I feel for him.  We’d all like to believe that pure evil has a limit, and that just maybe it’s been reached.

Sadly there is no evidence whatsoever that we’re anywhere near that limit, if it exists at all.

carbon_taxI go to a fair number of conferences on renewable energy, and sustainability more generally.  A few times a year, I check out events calendars, decided where I’m going and when, and then hit up the event producers for press passes for my associates and me.

Backyard with stone path and lush landscaping.Irresponsible resource usage and waste have been on the public’s mind for years now. As we see the detrimental effects our careless use has wrought on this planet, many are trying to find ways to reverse the damage and save the environment for future generations. How would one go about this, though? (more…)

CCL-Logo-H2Here’s an article discuss the perils of the energy storage industry, which, in my mind, misses the central issues:

The main issue facing the energy storage industry is an ironic one: so many people benefit from it that it’s hard to decide who should pay for it. Literally everyone connected with the electricity  supply chain is helped by the presence of storage: generation, transmission, distribution, and load. But our society doesn’t have a mechanism for apportioning the costs. (more…)

If you care about reducing your personal contribution to climate change, touring the world is a tricky proposition. There is no question that tourism has a profoundly negative impact on the environment. It leads to pollution through CO2 emissions and litter, as well as a number of other complications, like light and sound pollution. (more…)

1280px-Pala_eolica_Mele_08It goes without saying that integrating storage to wind and solar energy adds value.  Not only does it provide dispatchable power from sources that would have otherwise been intermittent, but it also allows the owner to sell “ancillary services” such a frequency and voltage waveform  regulation to grid operators in need of them.

OK, so that much is certain.  But what form should this storage take?  In particular, does it makes sense to implement storage into each turbine in a wind farm?  GE apparently thinks so.  Here’s an article that announces a new level of wind product called Brilliant that goes in this precise direction.

wave1Nowadays, everyone’s alert to “fake news”; no one wants to be duped by deliberate lies that wind up in our media.  But, of all the different types of stories we come across each day, perhaps the most dubious are those purporting to explain why a certain person is no longer employed in a certain position in government or industry.  Was Jones fired? Did he resign over philosophic differences? Did he retire?  Is he going to be indicted on embezzlement charges?  Was he forced out in a hostile take-over? (more…)

Furnace-not-working-Clicking-Noice-Girl-in-cold-homeWinter heating costs can be a financial burden. Most traditional heating solutions are not only expensive, but bad for the environment. Fossil fuels pollute the air, while electric heating requires increased production from utility companies. You might want to look at some of these alternatives, which could both lower your long-term costs and help to preserve the environment. (more…)

While Toyota and a few other global automakers are taking hydrogen fuel cell vehicles quite seriously, the clean technology’s chances of reaching mass adoption are still far away. (more…)

effects-of-climate-change-and-mitigation-policies-6-728The miracle of Pope Francis is his eagerness to jump into political issues and advocate so adamantly for humanitarian causes. Before his ordination, the changes through which the Catholic Church had gone over the past 1600 years could have been measured in angstroms; now they’re measured in parsecs.   (more…)
