160608135318-01-bernie-sanders-0608-super-169Long-time 2GE readers have seen this blog morph over the years to include more posts on politics, a result of my slowly coming to realize how completely impotent clean technology is in the absence of the political will to implement it.

This seems a fitting time to point this out, given that it’s the 76th birthday of Bernie Sanders who said, “A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So, what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.”

There’s a lot of noise in the world right now when there is chatter about sustainability and how it affects businesses. On one side, there are those that have the misconception that sustainability efforts are irrelevant and counterproductive for businesses that are serious about generating growth and profits. On the other side, there are advocates that have the passion and the drive to see sustainable activities and initiatives implemented in organisations but struggle to seamlessly integrate it into the operations of an organisation. tumblr-noygk3bvtj1uqa0xmo1-1280Frequent commenter MarcoPolo writes:  The solar and wind industries are both heavily dependent of government and consumer subsidies. When those subsidies are modified or withdrawn the industries suffer massive constrictions.  Solar and wind employment is a little like a gold rush. Booms always look statistically spectacular at first, because they start from a low base. ( 1+1= 2 a 100% increase!).  You remind me of one of those spruikers for the California gold rush!

Let me begin by thanking you for teaching me a new word: spruiker.  Apparently, it’s used predominantly in Australia (Americans would say “huckster”), but it’s good to know anyway. (more…)

Not only is conserving energy in your home good for the environment, it also can be good for your wallet. The less energy you use, the less it will cost you. Electricity is the energy used the most in most homes, so finding ways to conserve is important. Here are four ways consumers can save electricity every day. (more…)

55e9c7cae1086.imageThe solar and wind energy industries are growing at rates that even experts didn’t predict.  Solar energy sector jobs grew at a rate 17 times faster (and wind jobs 9 times faster) than the overall U.S. economy in 2016.  Of course, this growth rate pales to other countries that are making top-down commitments to renewables.

Ironically, some of the people who are most vocal about job creation tend to be the least likely to celebrate these facts.  It’s time to get on board, America.  The train is leaving the station.

dethleffs-e-home-electric-motor-home_100620684_hThe claim: “It’s especially perfect for those who seek to go off-grid for a while, as it runs without fuel or charging stations.”

No it doesn’t….unless you’re pushing it, pulling it, or coasting it down a hill.  Holy mother of God.  We live in a land that elected Donald Trump president and fills pastor/fraud Joel Osteen’s pockets with money, but we’re still not stupid enough to believe this.

130404162447-ray-lane-hewlett-packard-1024x576A reader mentions a series of meetings he attended on technologies that can be applied to coal plants to clear up their emissions, and, in reference to one of them, notes:  This is just one of many potential “cleaner fossil fuel” technologies presented.  Like most new technologies, I try to keep an open mind, while accepting that many will never be commercialized.

It’s most certainly true that most new technologies never commercialize, and it may be worth a few minutes to discuss some of the many reasons that this is true. (more…)
